About Chinese Residence Permit Application Procedures
A residence permit is the period of time a person is allowed to reside in a country of which they are not a citizen. A residence permit in China is like a visa; it is affixed to the passport and grants the right to enter and exit China multiple times during its validity period and the right to live legally in China.
There are two types of Chinese residence permits: temporary residence permit and permanent residence permit.
What is a People's Republic of China Temporary Residence Permit?
A Chinese temporary residence permit is issued to people who will stay in China for more than 6 months but less than 1 year, such as visiting scholars or interns.
Types of Chinese Visa Granting Temporary Residence Permit
The types of Chinese visas that grant temporary residence to the holder are listed below.
- China work visa
- China family reunification (Q1) visa
- China special visit (S1) visa
China Temporary Residence Permit Application Procedure
The application process for a Chinese temporary residence permit is as follows.
- You must have a visa that is valid for more than 6 months. Work visa, student visa, special visit visa, journalist visa and family reunification visa are suitable visas for obtaining temporary residence permit.
- After obtaining a Chinese visa, you must travel to China.
- You must register at the police station in your area of stay within 24 hours after arriving in China.
- You must undergo a health check and submit the report in Chinese. Some nationalities may be required to undergo a medical check-up before obtaining a visa.
- To apply for a temporary residence permit, you must prepare the necessary documents appropriate to the type of visa to be applied for.
- You must apply for a temporary residence permit within 30 days after entering China by submitting the required documents and recording your biometric information to the Exit and Entry Department of the Ministry of Public Security of China.
- You must pay the application fee. The temporary residence permit application fee is set at 400 Chinese yuan
- Your application will be processed within 15 working days and you will need to wait for the decision during this period.
Documents Required for China Temporary Residence Permit
For a Chinese temporary residence permit, you must submit the following required documents.
- Your valid passport
- Your Chinese visa
- Officially stamped visa application form
- Original registration form for temporary residence permit
- 2 passport photos
- Proof of a clean criminal record
- Health report

Validity Period of China Temporary Residence Permit
The Chinese temporary residence permit is valid for 1 year. If you need to extend your stay in China, you can apply for a residence permit extension. After residing in China for at least 4 years, you can apply for a permanent residence permit.
Depending on the type of visa you have, sometimes the validity of a temporary residence permit can be longer. The exact validity period of your residence permit, which allows you to live in China , is notified to you by the Exit and Entry Department of the Ministry of Public Security of China.
What is a Chinese Permanent Residence Permit?
A Chinese permanent residence permit is a 10-year residence permit granted to those who meet the criteria. You must have lived in China for at least 4 years before applying for a permanent residence permit.
Permanent residence permits are granted to individuals who have invested 2 million USD in eastern China or 0.5 million USD in western China, provincial or higher-level Chinese government employees, high-level employees in organizations conducting important national-level scientific projects or high-tech enterprises, individuals who have made notable contributions to China, individuals married to Chinese citizens for periods exceeding 5 years, and individuals who have held a permanent work residence permit within the last 5 years.
Chinese permanent residence permit is also called Chinese D visa .
China Permanent Residence Permit Application Documents
For a permanent residence permit in China, you must submit the following documents.
- Valid passport
- D visa
- 2 photos
- Completed application form for permanent residence permit
- Resume
- Clean criminal record
- Health report
People outside of China can apply for a D visa from Chinese foreign missions by submitting an official application letter issued by the Ministry of Public Security. Under Chinese residence permit regulations, the D visa must be changed to a 10-year permanent residence permit within 30 days of arrival. People in China can apply directly for permanent residence. If the applicant is in mainland China, he/she can apply directly for a Permanent Residence Permit.
Can I Get Citizenship from China with a Permanent Residence Permit?
People who have resided in China for a certain period of time with a permanent residence permit have the right to apply for Chinese citizenship if they meet the necessary criteria.
Foreign nationals ' applications for Chinese citizenship are accepted only if the required criteria are met.
