A visa liberalization dialogue was initiated between Turkey and the European Union countries in 2016. The aim of the visa liberalization dialogue is to lift the requirement for citizens of the Republic of Turkey to obtain a Schengen visa for short-term visits. If the visa liberalization dialogue is completed, all citizens with a biometric passport will have the right to make short-term business, family or touristic visits of up to 90 days within 180 days without obtaining a Schengen visa.

All European Union countries except the United Kingdom and Ireland, as well as non-EU countries such as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, are included in the Schengen area.
