A Sri Lankan student visa is a long-term visa that you must apply for if you have been accepted to study in Sri Lanka for secondary or high school, for undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, post-doctoral studies at a university, vocational or religious training from an accredited institution, or as part of a student exchange program.
How to Get a Sri Lankan Education Visa?
Follow the steps below to get a Sri Lankan education visa.
- Get accepted from the institution where you want to study.
- The representative of the educational institution must apply for entry visa approval on your behalf to the Sri Lanka Immigration Department 45 days before travel.
- The Sri Lankan Immigration Department authorizes the Embassy to apply for an entry visa at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Ankara.
- After obtaining your entry visa from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Ankara, go to Sri Lanka.
- Make an appointment for your study visa at the Sri Lanka Immigration Department in Colombo.
- On the appointment date, submit the required documents for the education visa and pay the visa fee.
- Finally, the long-term visa is stamped in your passport.
Applying for a First Entry Visa to Study in Sri Lanka
Before you apply for an entry visa to study in Sri Lanka, the educational institution in Sri Lanka must apply for a residence visa on your behalf with the Sri Lanka Immigration Department.
After the application for the residence visa, the Sri Lanka Immigration Department authorizes the Ankara Embassy to apply for the Sri Lanka entry visa and thus you can apply for the entry visa.

After entering Sri Lanka with an entry visa, you need to make an appointment at the Sri Lanka Immigration Department's head office in Colombo. Appointments are made by phone and you can reach the Sri Lanka Immigration Department Head Office by calling 0115329233 or 0115329235.
Documents Required for Sri Lanka Education Visa
For Sri Lankan education visa, you need to submit the following documents.
- Visa application form filled with complete and accurate information
- Passport and photocopy of the page containing identity information
- Two biometric photographs
- Receipt showing that visa fee has been paid
- Health protection plan registration
- Letter from school or educational institution in Sri Lanka
- Recommendation letter received from the relevant ministry
- Criminal record
